Assuming you buy rabbits at 2.5 months, then you will have to mate them after 2 months.
The 15 mothers will give birth to average 105 babies, because average is 7 per mother
They give birth after every 2.5 months
Meaning, they will be producing (105/2.5 ) = 42 rabbits per month
The 42 will give you average 1.5kg of meat at 4 months, with cost of production of 6,000/= each
Therefore,
Total meat = (42 × 1.5) = 63kg
Selling each kg at 15,000, that will be (15,000 × 63) = 945,000/=
Cost of production for the 42 = (42 × 6,000) = 252,000/=
Therefore,
Net profit = 945,000 – 252,000 = 693,000/=
Therefore, with 15 breeding females, and 3 males; you can be earning 693,000/= per month from meat sales
Starting capital,
You need four cages, and the rabbits
For Breeding Stock: (18 × 40,000) = 720,000/=
Cages: (4 × 700,000) = 2,800,000/=
Total = 720,000 + 2,800,000
= 3,520,000/=
*Working Capital,*
Feeding: each mature rabbit consumes 120g of feeds, meaning 15 rabbits will be consuming (120 × 15) = 1800g = 1.8kg
Cost of Feeding per kg = 1,200/=
Therefore, daily cost of feeding for breeding = (1.8 x 1,200) = 2,160/=
Interestingly, we are currently sourcing rabbits to sustain *Kampala Grilled Rabbit* from Kabale
We consumed all the rabbits around Kampala, and they got depleted
This starting capital can be reduced if the issue of cages is solved; the cages make starting hard and even expansion; thats why at Amilcar Cabral Rabbit Farm, we chose to just import them from China; its way much cheaper than making them locally; yet they are very stronger, since the Chinese already sent us samples which we based on to order
For example, if you include customs, transport, taxes, and customs (a little problemstic at times but can be dealt with); the cost of one cage will be minimum of 320,000/=; yet its very strong and can work for over 15yrs; but yet the locally made ones cost us 700,000/=, and you have to do maintence after every 4 to 5 months
Meaning, we are going to save over 380,000/= on each single cage
Yet getting super quality
After solving the issue of cages; and since we have solved the issue of market; we shall ensure most Ugandans have a backyard for rabbits
Each cage accomodates 50 to 60 rabbits
Each cage has 10 units; each unit accomodates 5 to 6; making it 50 to 60 rabbits per cage
Good luck!
IN OTHER NEWS;
For the almost 2.5yrs we have been in rabbit farming; we have realised that wooden cages are not sustainable especially when you are looking at large scale production, and looking at operating on standard procedures of rabbit farming.
We have been using them, and we have been facing a number of challenges with them; first, rabbits require super hygiene, because since they are not vaccinated like chicken, prevention of diseases becomes the left option; and in preventing, two things are required,
1. Proper feeding; the rabbits must have the required nutrients in their diet; fiber, proteins, vitamins; lysine, methionine, etc; must be available in required proportions. The rabbits must also have adequate clean water all the time.
2. Proper Hygiene; this is very clear, since most diseases that affect rabbits are caused by poor hygiene; now with wooden cages, they are hard to clean and disinfect; they hide micro-organisms and their creates a breeding ground for them; and at the same time, urine causes the wood to start rotting; therefore creating an environment not favourable for rabbit production.
Its that reason why when you watch rabbit farms on commercial scale in other countries outside Africa, its hard to find one where they use wooden cages; actually i have never seen one.
At the same time, the cost of putting up those cages is high, yet again not long lasting; you find that you have to do maintenance almost every after 4 to 5 months; and that raises the cost of doing the business.
Its from that point that we at Amilcar Cabral Rabbit Farm, chose to import strong long lasting cages from China, in the struggle to solve the problems in the rabbit industry, as we have been identifying them over the last 2.5yrs.
We imported 85 cages for our farm use in our efforts to expand our operation; these 85 cages each has 10 sections.
The cages reached Mombasa on 21st May, and because of the high taxes and clearing charges which have made it hard to get them here, we have decided to sell off 20 cages, such that we can raise the money to get the cages to Kampala.
We are selling each cage at 550,000/=. If interested, get in touch ASAP.
